British 'summer' weather produces highs and lows for Sibsport

Sunday 10th August 2008

A wet/dry qualifying session on Saturday morning on the National circuit at Silverstone resulted in 6th overall for Simon and 3rd in Class B – despite only completing a total of six laps, half of the cars around him.

Dreadful conditions prevailed in the afternoon for the first race of the weekend, but this was would turn into an advantage for Sibsport. With the Seat handling supremely well in the tricky conditions compared to many quicker cars, Simon climbed to 3rd overall by lap three and was battling hard with Rhys Lloyd, in a similar Seat Cupra, for the lead in Class B.

Simon made his move on lap six but was pushed onto the grass by Lloyd, sending the Durham driver spinning. Damage was superficial but the incident left Simon down the order. He showed the cars pace by setting fastest lap, but as moisture collected through the air vent mounted on the roof of the Seat it steamed up the windscreen and Simon had to pit just before the end of the race to restore some vision. He was still classified 12th, 5th in Class B.

So to Sunday – a dry qualifying pushed Simon down the grid to 10th, although he was still 3rd in class.

With the rain now holding off his progress wasn’t quite as rapid as it was on Saturday, but once again Simon was having a terrific tussle with another Seat – this time Andrew Morrison. After trying for several laps, Simon finally got past on lap seven of the twenty lap race.

He held the position – 2nd in class – for the remainder of the race comfortably. That was, however, until - with the chequered flag in sight - a fuel surge problem caused the car to run dry just a lap from the finish.

A weekend that had shown awesome performance rewarded the team with nothing – but that can be motor racing!
